VA Establishes ALS as a Presumptive Compensable Illness

The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced that amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is now on the list of presumptive diseases associated with military service.

The development of ALS, manifested at any time after discharge or release from active military, naval, or air service is sufficient to establish service connection for the disease.  However, service connection for the disease will not be established if the veteran did not have active, continuous service of 90 days or more.

For additional information, contact the VA at 1-800-827-1000 or your local veterans services office.
