NEWS RELEASE

Commissioners Keep Drivers Ed on the Road and Ensure the County's Citizens Will Be Counted
Posted on: 6/23/2009
Sanford, Fla., June 23, 2009-Seminole County Commissioners gave the Driver Education Pilot Program at Winter Springs and Lyman High Schools the green light to continue. Approval came after the Board was given a presentation of the final analysis of the two-year program. The program was implemented in 2007 and has had 814 graduates thus far. The cost of the program was almost $47,000 less than estimated due to in-kind contributions of vehicles, tires and oil changes. The final analysis compared students who participated in the Driver Education Pilot Program and 15 to 18-year-old licensed Seminole County drivers who did not, and included citation rates. The Commissioners gave their unanimous support for the expansion of this program as grant funding allows.
The Board approved the completion of the third floor shell for the John E. Polk Correctional Facility expansion. The third floor, which is anticipated to provide 144 additional beds, is expected to be built out in 2012/13 to meet demands for a projected increase in the inmate population.
In other business, Seminole County citizens can be assured that they will be counted as part of the 2010 Census. A presentation was delivered about the approaching 2010 census and included a call for a “Complete Count Committee” to include a chairperson, committee participants and an awareness campaign. The Board gave its full support to the initiative. The United States Constitution mandates that a census of the population be taken every 10 years. Local committees will increase the likelihood of an accurate Census count.
The importance of the arts in our community was recognized as the Board and the Seminole Cultural Arts Council, Inc. spotlighted one of our local talents, Jacqueline Jones. Ms. Jones has contributed greatly to the performing arts with her beautiful voice and vivacious personality. She has participated in theatre productions, television shows, commercials and festivals throughout the world, including an appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Ms. Jones is more than an artist; she is also a nurse and finds time to devote to causes such as HIV/Aids Awareness and Juvenile Diabetes.
And finally, a new chapter has begun for two Seminole County employees. The Board recognized the two employees who have a combined 41 years of experience upon their retirement. Diane Merkt says goodbye to the County after serving for more than 23 years. Ms. Merkt was a Commissioner’s Aide for the last 16, most recently the lead aide to Chairman Bob Dallari. In addition, Jerry Matthews retires from the County’s Public Works Engineering Department at the end of the month. Mr. Matthews served the citizens of Seminole County for 18 years.
