Get Outdoors and Celebrate Parks and Recreation Month

Sanford, Fla., June 24, 2009-Celebrate this July. Its Parks and Recreation Month!
Get outside, pack a picnic, play on a playground or reserve a sports court. Visit one of Seminole County's 24 parks, 60 miles of trails or eight wilderness areas. These amenities offer our residents a place to connect, a place to have fun and get fit, and a place to simply enjoy our natural treasures. There is absolutely something for everybody.
For more than 20 years, July has been the month that our nation celebrates Parks and Recreation. Each July there are summer programs to promote outdoor physical activity and community volunteers come together to make their local outdoor spaces better places for all.
Spending the day at the park is not only great for your wallet, after all Seminole County parks are free; it's great for your health too. Visiting a park frequently and being active can reduce stress; improve cardiovascular health, help ward off obesity and decrease feelings of depression. Playing at parks also helps youth build and maintain physical health, improve self-esteem, and avoid at-risk behavior such as drug use and vandalism.
From July 20th-24th the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) also celebrates Action Advocacy Week. During this week, citizens are encouraged to talk to their legislators and tell them how and why the environment and open space are so important to our community.
