"History in Miniature" Exhibt Focuses on Local History, Victorian Architecture and Fashion
Posted on: 7/15/2009
Sanford, Fla., July 15, 2009-The Museum of Seminole County History steps back in time to the Victorian era in its new exhibit, "History in Miniature: Victorian Structures of Altamonte Springs" running Tuesday, July 28 to Monday, September 28. Scale models of the Altamonte Train Station, Altamonte Hotel, Altamonte Chapel, two famous homes and the Jasmine Theater will be on display. These structures feature traditional Victorian architecture, which was known for its elements of fantasy and decorative emotionalism. Examples of Victorian clothing and accessories accompany the models to create a feel for the period in Central Florida.
Model builder Lee Trenary of Deltona created the models for the Altamonte Springs Historical Society. He says they are built to a scale of one inch to three feet and are made of basswood. Particular detail in the models is given to brickwork, latticework and unique woodworking that characterized Victorian architecture. Mr. Trenary will speak about how he built the models on Thursday, August 6 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The Victorian period, named after the long and peaceful reign of British monarch Queen Victoria (1837-1901), saw the rise of a stable middle class in both America and Britain. The models tell the story of the growth of Altamonte Springs, a typical Central Florida town located at a stop on the South Florida Railroad line, which was made famous and prosperous by the building of a hotel to cater to wealthy Northerners from Boston. The Altamonte Hotel, which was razed by a fire in 1953, is immortalized in one of Trenary's fine models.
The Museum of Seminole County History is open Tuesday through Friday afternoons from 1-5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. It is located at 300 Bush Blvd. in Sanford. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children and students, plus tax. Children under 4 are free. Group tours are available with advanced registration. The Museum is handicapped accessible. |
