NEWS RELEASE

Commissioners Support Housing for Lower Income Residents and the 2010 Census
Posted on: 8/25/2009
Sanford, Fla., August 25, 2009 - Today the Board of County Commissioners approved an Agreement with Habitat for Humanity in Seminole County for the development of five new single family homes to be built in Sanford. The Agreement requires Habitat to sell two of the units to very low income households (incomes not exceeding 50 percent of the area median income). The remaining three units are to be sold to low income households (incomes not exceeding 80 percent of the area median income). As part of the agreement Habitat is required to provide a minimum of $300,000 in leveraging, including volunteer labor and discounted/donated materials and services.
In other business, the Board discussed the upcoming 2010 U.S. Census. Census Forms will be mailed in March of next year, and Census taking will occur on April 1, 2010. Commissioners are in the process of selecting members to serve on the Complete Count Committee, a group of volunteers who will be responsible for developing a plan to create awareness of the Census, achieve broad participation, attain an accurate count and improve the response rate. An accurate and complete Census count increases and maintains eligibility for State and Federal grant programs and enables Central Florida to qualify for additional representation in the House of Representatives and at the Local, State and Federal levels. It is anticipated that the Committee will remain active through September 2010.
