GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SERVICES (GIS)
Data Sources
Introduction Seminole
County has developed a Geographic Information System (GIS) to support many of
its planning, environmental, and regulatory activities. This database includes a
considerable amount of information that is potentially of value to federal,
state, regional, and local governmental agencies, as well as to private
businesses. The purpose of this document is to describe the procedures for
requesting GIS digital data other than through downloading from this web site.
Digital Data Availability
Data available for distribution include those for
which all quality control procedures have been completed
and that are loaded into the County's digital map
library. Currently available data layers are listed
in the Layer
Bibliography. All data layers are stored in
State Plane Coordinate Feet, Florida East Zone,
NAD 83. Detailed information about specific layers
may be viewed in the Data Dictionary, or by contacting
the Geographic Information Services Division at
(407) 665-1107, between 8AM & 5PM Eastern Time
daily.
Sensitive Data Policy
Seminole County does have in place a policy
regarding dissemination of sensitive data via
these pages.
View the policy here and direct any
questions regarding this to (407) 665-1105.
Distribution Format
Digital data will be distributed in Arc/Info uncompressed
export format (E00) or ArcView Shape File format,
or CD, or 3.5" disks only. Translation of data to
other formats or datum is the sole responsibility
of the purchaser of the data.
Data is only available in the spatial format in which
it is stored in the County GIS database. These formats are a function of data
density and application and correspond to either the United States Geological
Survey's (USGS) 1:24000 scale quadrangles, one square mile tiles, or to single
countywide coverage. Any subsetting or merging of data is the sole
responsibility of the recipient.
Digital Data Request
Procedure All requests for digital data should be made to
Seminole County Geographic Information Services Division, 1101 East 1st St.,
Sanford, FL. 32771-1468. Requestors must identify the layer(s) requested, the
area of interest, your operating system and software version, and the choice of
file and media format.
A cost estimate and anticipated completion date will
be provided for each order received. Final data charges may vary slightly from
the estimated amount because of the difficulties involved in determining file
sizes prior to the actual creation of the files. The requestor will be notified
of the final cost following completion of the job. Data will be released
following receipt of payment.
Disclaimer of Warranty
GIS data are provided on an "as is" basis. The County specifically
disclaims any warranty, either expressed or implied, including, but not limited
to, the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular use.
The entire risk as to quality and performance is with the purchaser. In no event
will the County or its staff be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental,
special, consequential, or other damages, including loss of profit, arising out
of the use of this data even if the County has been advised of the possibility
of such damages.
Digital Products Price List
Reproduction costs are calculated using a formula based on the
number of "readable" characters that could be printed on a sheet of paper, 11" x
17" in size. At 66 lines per page, and 132 characters a line, a "15 cent page"
would represent 8712 bytes. Therefore, each 1000 bytes of data costs 1.7 cents.
At this rate, the cost of a 1 megabyte file would be $17.00. There are no
additional charges for documentation, disks or tapes as this cost is included in
the basic fee.
In the case of special requests, charges are added
for staff programming time and media (time and materials). Prior to the
delivery of any special requests, each request will have an exact cost
determined and will require a signed authorization to continue. Data will be
released following receipt of payment. All special requests will be handled on
a "first come, first served" basis.
